Newbie question about SQL 2000 backup
Logged in as domain admin
I want to do a manual backup of my database
So I follow the Microsoft document
Open Enterprise Manager, right click the database, all tasks, backeup
database, select full backup, add destination (I choose the default file
location C:\ ProgramdFiles\SQL Servere etc. - as I don't have a backup
device)
I get a warning 'the filename specified is recognised as a directory name.
The file won't be able to be rewritten. Do you wish to continue?'
I select OK
I then get an error '(ODBC SQLState 42000) Cannot open the backup device
C:\Program Files\etc.' Device error or device offline. See the SQL server log
for more details'
The eventlog error is '17055' Source' MSSQLServer' '3041 :
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE [DATASTORE] TO DISK = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\' WITH NOINIT ,
NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'DATASTORE backup', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT '
Any ideas anyone please !?!why wouldn't you specify full file name (for example : C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\DATASTORE.BAK ) ?

Newbie question : SQL Admin on Windows server 2003 small business edition.
server it does not include enterprise manager. How am i supposed to be able
to administor anythig, i thought i had seen an app mentioned that did it via
a web console but cannot find such an app.
I am trying to connect to my own SQL server and cannot, someone else has
tried to access it via their enterprise manager but they require a username
/ password, i have tried every password i can imagine that has been used for
the setup of the server, is there any way i can reset the pass or check what
it is?
As it's our server i have full admin rights on it.
Many thanks,
Moss
Assuming you mean SBS 2003 premium, did you select to install SQL Server in
the setup? Check under program files for Microsoft SQL Server directory. I
don't believe it installs automatically...

newbie question
express ?
I used admin to create the database, granted the user smith full access to
the directory and files for the database. I tried grant the login id smith
access by simply smith as well as mypc\smith. both were rejected
how should I go about granting user permission?
Hi
I don;t use SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express but this describes how
to do the tasks
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/mgsqlexpwssmse.mspx
You may want use SQLCMD and the CREATE LOGIN/CREATE USER commands if you
have a large number of logins/users to create.

For #1, look at the Windows Service manager.
This has a "Recovery" tab, and the ability to run a custom program on
service failure.

1. SQL Server Agent can send an alert if the MSSQL process reports a
fatal error, but if it's down as well, it won't be able to alert you.
So you may want to look at it as a general Windows issue - if you
already have a Windows event monitoring system in place, then you can
use that to do something when the MSSQL services stop and start (by
default, they are set to auto restart). You can also use the Control
Panel Services applet to do something (run a script etc.) when a
service fails to start.
2. Email/pager notifications require SQL Mail:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;EN-US;263556
After doing that, then you can use Enterprise Manager to create
whatever alerts you need. There is a demo alert already created for a
full log condition, so you can use it as a template.

newbe to SQL2005 & MSDE
having on trouble installing, just gettting everything connected.
(xp sp2)
First i loaded MSDE, then realized i needed the web admin tool to create the db...but can't get the web admin tool to connnect to anything..
so I took a stab at SQL 2005 Std ed beta....loaded fine, but then realized i need another admin tool to create db so I loaded the xpress manager...again, loads fine, but doesnt'connec to any DB..
why is this so difficult for me....SQL Svr v6 was so much easier with enterprise manager!!!
HELP!!
DonDon, what do you mean by "the web admin tool"? The utility that comes with Visual Studio .NET 2005?
Can you explain what you mean by "but doesn't connect to any DB."? Are you receiving any error messages?
