Newbie question about installation

Hi,

I have just downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and am trying to run the setup. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I have received an error message saying that my operating system does not meet Service Pack level requirements. The documentation on the website shows that my service pack level is correct. Additionally the message suggests that I install the service pack from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50380 but when I select that I get transferred to another web page which is unrelated.

Any ideas?

Did you install the .NET Framework on the machine (.NET 2.0 with additional fixes) ?

HTH, Jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||

I have seen a couple of people asking this question about the service pack, and it was already loaded on... One of the solutions that has been found is to re run the service pack install on the machine, I would try that.

|||Thanks for the suggestion. I have rerun the download and this time I have had no problem.sql

Newbie question : SQL Admin on Windows server 2003 small business edition.

I have noticed that although SQL server is packaged as part of windows 2003
server it does not include enterprise manager. How am i supposed to be able
to administor anythig, i thought i had seen an app mentioned that did it via
a web console but cannot find such an app.
I am trying to connect to my own SQL server and cannot, someone else has
tried to access it via their enterprise manager but they require a username
/ password, i have tried every password i can imagine that has been used for
the setup of the server, is there any way i can reset the pass or check what
it is?
As it's our server i have full admin rights on it.
Many thanks,
Moss
Assuming you mean SBS 2003 premium, did you select to install SQL Server in
the setup? Check under program files for Microsoft SQL Server directory. I
don't believe it installs automatically...

Newbie question

When the installation of the Enterprizd edition completed
there was a message as follows
Setup could not initialize the report server. You must
manually initialize the report server beforeusing it for
the first time. For more information , seethe Reporting
Services setup documentaion.
I looked through the readme doc bit did not see anything
about this. Can anyone tell me what this means?I found the command window command to initialize the
report server
rsactivate -c"%installdir%\Reporting
Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config"
It reurned a message saying that
" Failure to start the web service. The Report Server
Web Service has not generated a public key. The
Servermay not have started sucessfully. Check the log
files for more information.

activate and install of RS unless installing in a web farm configuration.
However, I ran into this problem when installing a non web farm install of
RS.
I was able to overcome this by accessing the report manager or report
service with a user account that has administrative priviledges. Initially,
I was using a lower priviledge account to execute reports programmatically
which was failing. Once I hit the service with an Admin account, it
activated and then my lower priviledge account worked fine after that for
what I needed it to do.

NEWBIE Needs Help automating data from another server

Hi,

I am able to do these actions interactively from SQL 2005 (not developers nor enterprise edition, just using SQL 2005 Mgmt Studio) and want to "script/batch" them so I can have them automatically run at a pre selected time.

First: I am able to delete the table by performing a right click on the table, then click Delete from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005. I verify the table is completely gone with a refresh. (I pulled the code that did this ..... DROP TABLE etc. to Notepad)

2nd: I am able to import the table (again from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005) and have saved this action as a SSIS. Execute the script and "waLa" I have all 17K rows of data. I pulled this create table code into notepad also.

Now I put the code of both of the above actions together (drop table and create table) into one SQL query and execute it. This does not give me the same results of above, instead my table is blank now.

Maybe there is a better way. The business problem I am attempting to solve: I am refreshing the data in a as/400 table weekly. I want that refreshed data to be available in the SQL2005 database without my having to press buttons first thing Monday morning. Can any one help? Thanks in advance.

Below is the Code:

USE [400kas]
GO
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[navar100] Script Date: 09/07/2007 16:09:04 ******/
DROP TABLE [dbo].[navar100]
GO

USE [400kas]
GO
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[Query] Script Date: 09/07/2007 16:12:31 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[navar100](
[CMPNO] [decimal](3, 0) NOT NULL,
[ARTDT] [datetime] NOT NULL,
[AUDDT] [datetime] NOT NULL,
[ARDDT] [datetime] NOT NULL,
[CCUS#] [decimal](6, 0) NOT NULL,
[CCNAM] [nvarchar](25) NOT NULL,
[CUSNO] [decimal](6, 0) NOT NULL,
[CNAME] [nvarchar](25) NOT NULL,
[SHPNO] [decimal](4, 0) NOT NULL,
[ARRCD] [nvarchar](1) NOT NULL,
[AUDUS] [nvarchar](10) NOT NULL,
[INVNO] [decimal](6, 0) NOT NULL,
[CUSPO] [nvarchar](15) NOT NULL,
[REFNO] [decimal](6, 0) NOT NULL,
[COMNT] [nvarchar](10) NOT NULL,
[SHPPO] [nvarchar](15) NOT NULL,
[AMONT] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[AMOUNT] [decimal](24, 8) NOT NULL,
[REMAN] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[INREG] [decimal](3, 0) NOT NULL,
[INSAL] [decimal](3, 0) NOT NULL,
[TMCOD] [nvarchar](2) NOT NULL,
[CRHLD] [nvarchar](1) NOT NULL,
[CRLIM] [decimal](13, 0) NOT NULL,
[CRDAY] [decimal](3, 0) NOT NULL,
[TCRCD] [nvarchar](3) NOT NULL,
[TEXRT] [decimal](11, 6) NOT NULL,
[R1RGL] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[TAXAM] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[TFRTX] [decimal](13, 3) NOT NULL,
[TFRGT] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[TSPCH] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[SPCST] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL,
[IRPFT] [decimal](13, 2) NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

Instead of dropping and recreating the table, you can just truncate it.

e.g.

Code Snippet

truncate table [400kas];

|||

1) create an ssis package that pulls the the data from the as400 to your table

-execute sql task- truncate table <tableName>

-data flow task to pull data from source to target

2)create a sql server agent job that executes the package, and runs at the time you'd like (ex. everyday at 7am)

Newbie in SQL server 2005

Good day. Is there any version of SQL server 2005(not include Express Edition) same as SQL server 2000 Personal edition ? I am planning to install new SQL server 2005 in my pc now. I am using Windows XP SP2 now. I tried to install to Entreprise Trial version, unfortunately it just works as client. Thank you in advance.Regards,Anson

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is the replacement for MSDE & SQL Server Personal Edition.

See the following edition information:

http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/bknight/comparisonofsqlserver2005editions.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/default.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/msde2sqlexpress.mspx

Have a look into this link. This contains the minimum requirements for SQL 2005. On having a look into this you can decide which version can be installed on your machine

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/sysreqs/default.mspx

Note : For enterprise edition the OS required is Microsoft Windows 2003 server

Best is to use Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition if want to install on Windows Xp and want to use for development...

newbie can't connect

Windows XP pro, SQL Server 2000 developers edition installed on the =
client computer.
Installed SQL Server using all defaults except changed detination drive =
and folders to D:
Now the server does not run. I get the following error:
SQL Server registration failed...
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I'm trying to use "Windows authentication", which I assume means that =
when I log onto my Windows computer that that's the only login =
information that SQL server needs (that's how it seemed to work on my =
notebook).
What do I start to look for to solve this problem?
TIA.Is the SQL Service actually running ? If you run the following from the
command line does it connect
osql -S(local) -E
This assumes you installed a default instance. You can check this by running
Start>Run services.msc
Check for services starting with MSSQL. If you have one called MSSQLServer
then you have a default instance, if the service has a dollar ($) sign in it
e.g. MSSQL$INST01 then you have a named instance and connect like so
osql -S(local)\INST01 -E

Newbie - Help with Constraints

Dear all,
I am new to SQL Server (using the express edition.) I need to set up a
contraint that checks values from one column in three tables against
one column's value in a pending insertion. If the value that is
attempting to be inserted equals a value from either of the three
tables, the insertion should fail (throw a SQL exception').
Essentially this constraint should operate just like a "no duplicates"
constraint would operate if all the data was in a single column in a
single table and a client attempted to add a duplicate value.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
JohnnyJohnny,
You could embed the INSERT in a stored procedure and perform the table
checks (SELECTs) prior to the INSERT. Or you could create an INSERT trigger
that would ROLLBACK if the value existed in one of the tables. The former
would be better for performance.

Put the INSERT statement within the stored procedure and call the proc to
perform the INSERT.
