Newbie question about Office version on client machine

Does it matter what version of Office is installed on the clients
machine for opening reports generated by reporting Services?
The reason I am asking is because our users are getting an office
upgrade from 2000 to XP on their machines.No, it does not matter.

Newbie question - do I need to SQL Server client?

This is very much a newbie question as I have not worked with MSSQL Server
before. I may be hosting a MS SQL Server database for a web site soon and
will require to generate reports from the data.

I assume I can just use SQL queries within my ASP web pages?

Will I need to buy the MS SQL Server client tool to be able to work with the
database? I can run queries on the database without having the client can't
I?

i think you can use ADO and then there is no need for
client tools or something else. If you do a google with
"ADO in ASP" you will find a lot of information about
books, hints, troubles and other stuff.

newbie pl/sql outputs select results

Hi,
I want to write a PL/SQL search engine that does some complex checking of various tables for a client's website. I could write it all in a PHP $sql = "SELECT ..." but I want to put it the sql into PL/SQL and am having trouble figuring out how PL/SQL outputs results.

Basically, I want to call the procedure with some keywords and have it return the results. Something like this:

create package jonsearch is

procedure getrecords(kw IN varchar, results OUT ?) is
begin
--complex sql goes here
end;

end jonsearch;

jonsearch.getrecords("keywords") would return the results just like select * from table would return results.

My trouble is that every tutorial I have read relies on dbms_output.put_line to output data. I want to output the results as a set, with an output variable, but I can't find a tutorial that shows how to use output variables.

Any help, even pointing me to a tutorial, would be great.

JonIt turns out what I was looking for is called a REF CURSOR. I needed to create a package that defines this reference cursor, and then use that as my output variable.

How are you wanting to output the variables? If you want to simply return the values, you will use the DBMS_OUTPUT package. If you are returning to Apache through the modplsql module, you will use the HTP and HTF packages.

Windows XP pro, SQL Server 2000 developers edition installed on the =

Installed SQL Server using all defaults except changed detination drive =

Now the server does not run. I get the following error:
SQL Server registration failed...
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I'm trying to use "Windows authentication", which I assume means that =
when I log onto my Windows computer that that's the only login =
information that SQL server needs (that's how it seemed to work on my =
notebook).
What do I start to look for to solve this problem?

command line does it connect
osql -S(local) -E
This assumes you installed a default instance. You can check this by running
Start>Run services.msc
Check for services starting with MSSQL. If you have one called MSSQLServer
then you have a default instance, if the service has a dollar ($) sign in it
e.g. MSSQL$INST01 then you have a named instance and connect like so
osql -S(local)\INST01 -E

Newbie Alert: Amending all client workstation ODBC's

Hi All,
Newbie question for you all, sorry. I'm currently migrating my DB's to a
new SQL 2000 server and am wondering if there's any way of centrally
changing the ODBC settings of all my workstations? I really don't want to
have the support guys visit each machine in turn and do this manually.
Any advice gratefully received.

The ODBC aliases are stored within the registry. Assuming that you are just
changing a server name or IP address of the currently configured database
server you should be able to create a .reg file that your users can "run"
within the logon script.
There is one issue with this method: The users have to have the ability to
write to that part of the registry.
