Newbie question about Office version on client machine

Does it matter what version of Office is installed on the clients
machine for opening reports generated by reporting Services?
The reason I am asking is because our users are getting an office
upgrade from 2000 to XP on their machines.No, it does not matter.

newbie question -- error when connecting via System DSN on any network but the SQL Servers

I'm very new to using SQL Server. All I'm trying to do at the moment, is
create a System DSN on a Windows 2000 Professional desktop machine to
connect to a SQL Server 2000 server which is running on a different
network. When I try the DSN while connected to the SAME network that the
SQL Server machine is on, it works fine. But when I connect from any
other network, I receive the following error:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10061
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpent
(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not
exist or access denied.

Here are the settings that I'm using for my System DSN:
Name: test
Which SQL Server do you want to connect to? 129.22.180.203
* With SQL Server Authentication using a login ID and password entered by
the user
* Connect to SQL Server to obtain default settings for the additional
configuration options
Login ID: SA
Password: <correct password entered
And in the Client Configuration:
Server Alias: 129.22.180.203
Network libraries: TCP/IP
Server Name: 129.22.180.203
* Dynamically determine port

Also, the driver is:
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver version 03.85.1025

Please, if anyone has any ideas on what I am doing wrong, I can use all
the help I can get!!

I'm not sure what you mean by "a different network". If you mean that
the networks are physically separated by a firewall, or if you're
connecting over a VPN, then you might need to open the ports for
MSSQL:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...2&Product=sql2k

Simon|||Simon,
By "different network", I mean the following:
The SQL Server is running on a Windows 2000 Server machine that is located
on a University network. If I am on any machine that is also connected to
the University network, OR if I VPN into the University network, I can
successfully connect to the SQL Server in my DSN connection with the
parameters I gave in my original posting. However, if I try from my
office computer which is on a hospital network (and IS behind a firewall)
or if I try from any computer where I'm dialed up to my ISP (no firewall
would block anything here) I still can't connect to the SQL Server in my
DSN connection.
So I really don't think it's the port that is being blocked.

Are there any connection settings in SQL Server itself that I may have
configured incorrectly? Since I know so little about the software, I'm
not sure where even to begin to look.

Thanks for helping out!

From your description, it seems you are trying to connect over the public
internet to the SQL Server at your university. Port 1433 needs to be open
to allow this and it is likely that the firewall at the university has the
port closed for security reasons. It works when you are connected to the
university LAN or VPN because the firewall doesn't block 1433 in those
cases.

Can another port be used for SQL Server to run on (rather than using the
default port 1433, which is what it is currently running on)? It might be
easier for me to use a different port that is already open at the
university, rather than attempt to request that they open port 1433
(unlikely they will do this).
Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, it is possible to use another port. (Which would affect everyone
using that server, as SQL Server uses only one port at a time.) No,
I don't think your university is likely to make SQL Server available on the
Internet on any port, least of all if you insist on using SQL Server
authentication.

Books Online for SQL Server SP3 at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techin.../2000/books.asp|||Although it is certainly possible to configure SQL Server to listen on an
alternate port, it appears the SQL Server is configured to use 1433 because
your working local/VPN connections use the default port.

as MSDE does not provide graphical management utilities, you should resort
on Transact-SQL statement execution via oSql.exe, the command line
management tool available and bundled with it...
further info on how to use it can be found at

Newbie Q: SQL Redundancy

Hi, If I have two machine in a cluster
- if I install SQL on one will the installation replicate on the other or do I have to install both seperatly,
- if I have SQL operating on both nodes and I write SQL to one will it replicate over automatically (does it remove the need for SQL redundancy)
- would WebPages do the same.
sorry for the newbie questions but was finding it hard to get specific answers, any help would be appreciated.
Steve
SQL Cluster installation puts the binaries on whatever host nodes you
specify. You can add or remove nodes later if you need to. The clustered
data store is accessable from both nodes, but is arbitrated so that only one
host at a time owns it owns. The entire data store shifts to another node
during a failover. A failover appears like a SQL stop/start to the outside
world. If you have a SQL instance running on a different host node in the
same cluster, it will have a different set of databases and will appear like
(because it is) a separate SQL server.
I do not understand your question about WebPages.

|||Setup will install SQL Server 2000 on both nodes. That is, it will install
the binaries and utilities on a local drive on each node and the data and
log files on the shared drive.
There is only one set of shared databses between the nodes. There is no
data redundancy; only high availability. So if you want data redundancy you
will need to use something like replication or log shipping.
Rand
This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties and confers no rights.
|||Even in a SQL cluster, you have only one set of data (mounted by one node or
the other, but not both).
If you lose the storage solution or corrupt the data, you're toast. That's
where replication comes in.
Look at either NSI product (www.nsisoftware.com).
GeoCluster splits the storage under MSCS, so each node has its own copy -
although only one is active at a time.
DoubleTake replicates data between servers, and also from the active MSCS
node, to another server. This can be built in such a way that you could do
backups or snaps from the redundant server (which gives you some additional
restore and rollback capabilities).

Newbie Q setting up MSDE

Hello. I've installed MSDE (Win2k machine, running asp.net on localhost),
and it says 'Not Connected' when I mouseover the icon in the system tray. I
opened the SQL Server service manager, and there are two empty fields-
Server and Services. Please, what do I put in these fields? Also, what
connection string would I use with MSDE. Thanks a lot

please verify, using the services applet (control panel->performance and
maintenance->administrative tools->services [on XP] , control
panel->administrative tools->services [on Win2k]) that your MSDE instance is
currently up and running...
you can then try typing in the service name of your MSDE instance to manage
it...
MSDE installs by default disabling network protocols and this can be an
issue for some ODBC related functions and, sometime, the SQL Server
instances are not enlisted by the Service Manager, as reported in

Newbie needs help

Hi,
I am using SQLEXPRESS running locally on my machine and am trying to create
a database (AdventureWorks) for an example that I am using. What complicates
this a bit is that this example is using NAnt. The local.properties.xml file
contains the following:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<properties>
<property name="sqlToolsFolder" value="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Tools\Binn"/>
<property name="osql.ConnectionString" value="-E"/>
<property name="initial.catalog" value="AdventureWorks"/>
<property name="config.ConnectionString" value="data

Catalog=${initial.catalog}"/> <property name="database.path"
value="C:\root\development\databases" />
<property name="osql.exe" value="${sqlToolsFolder}\osql.exe" />
</properties>
When I open the Enterprise Manager and run the script for attach.sql the
database is created fine.
when I run the "build builddb" I get the following error:

Newbie needs a hand with SQL2005 Reports

I'm trying to run some reports on SQL 2005, but can't even pass the first step of launching the report builder. I have SQL2005 on my local machine, but the report server is installed on a remote server. I launched SQL Business Intelligence Development Studio, which brings Visual studio, but i keep getting a prompt to enter a connection string. How do i get the connection string, or how do i set up my datasource?

Help!

To answer your question, try the following, but i think you need to configure 'iis', as well as 'reporting services configuration' before hand:

open sql server business intelligence studio
file
new
project
report server project
ok
view
solution explorer
right click reports
add
new item
data source
add
edit
<enter your database details here>

...and so on

look up the microsoft tutorial for creating a basic report in 'sql server business intelligence studio' help

newbie IIS & MS SQL connection problem ;-(

Have successfully installed MS SQL on my Win XP Pro machine, created tables,
and a dsn, which is working fine in Dreamweaver. So far so good.

When I run the page on IIS I get the following:-

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database
requested in login 'MenuPlanner'. Login fails.

I think it's permissions - anyone got any clues as to where to look?

TIA

You could see if the login MenuPlanner has got permissions to the
database you are logging in to. That would be a start.

This is what has got me - permissions are set up. I've created a dsn, which
I can run queries in Dreamweaver and filter results just fine. I'm having
trouble when running the page on my webserver (IIS which is working fine)

Is MenuPlanner the database name or the login name?

If it is the database name, are you connecting to the database via a
userid/password or are you connecting with Windows interactive UserID?

Sounds like the login has a default db which does not exist, or the login
does have access to. Use sp_helplogins to check, use sp_defaultdb to change.

Yea, but a DSN is being used so we have to believe that MenuPlanner is the
name of the DSN Connection. I am assuming that the DSN was created on the
IIS server and connects successfully when you "test connection" in the ODBC
dialog.

I highly recommend using a DSN-less connection in your ASP pages. There is
lots of documentation on ADODB.

If you need some sample connection strings let me know.|||Gregory Dean (gdean@.datapex.com) writes:

Not sure what you mean, but since SQL Server does not know what a DSN
is, MenuPlanner cannot be the name of the DNS. But it can be the
login name specified in the DSN.

> I highly recommend using a DSN-less connection in your ASP pages.

I echo that. DSN is a concept that I never understood the point with.
An extra layer that only causes hassle.

Newbie Advice re: Installing SSRS

Hi, I've decided to install SSRS (2005) on my windows XP machine. I'm not very familiar with IIS (i'm currently using version 5.1) and I think between IIS and SSRS, i've managed to break something.

I've been looking at various articles to try and get some clarity on my predicament. However, i'm not getting any joy with them.s

I have located the logfiles (which I can provide). Unfortunately, I have no idea how to intepret the information contained therein.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance

Can you open your RSWebApplication.config file(%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Reporting Services\ReportManager\RSWebApplication.config) and check the entries for ReportServerUrl and ReportServerVirtualDirectory. You have to specify ONLY one of them and not both.

For example,

<Configuration>
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>

Thanks,
Sharmila

Hi Sharmila, thanks for enquiring.

The contents of the configuration file is listed below:

The <servername> has replaced the name of my server.

Many thanks

Clint

<Configuration>

<UI>

<ReportServerUrl>http:/<servername>/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>

</UI>

<Extensions>

<DeliveryUI>

<Extension Name="Report Server Email" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.EmailDeliveryProvider.EmailDeliveryProviderControl,ReportingServicesEmailDeliveryProvider">

<RSEmailDPConfiguration>

<DefaultRenderingExtension>MHTML</DefaultRenderingExtension>

</RSEmailDPConfiguration>

</Configuration>

</Extension>

<Extension Name="Report Server FileShare" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.FileShareDeliveryProvider.FileShareUIControl,ReportingServicesFileShareDeliveryProvider"/>

</DeliveryUI>

</Extensions>

<Add Key="MaxActiveReqForOneUser" Value="20"/>

<Add Key="DisplayErrorLink" Value="true"/>

</Configuration>

|||

As seen in the config file, you have specified both ReportServerUrl and ReportServerVirtualDirectory. You can specify ONLY one.

<UI>

<ReportServerUrl>http:/<servername>/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>

</UI>

Try something like this,

<UI>

<ReportServerUrl>http:/<servername>/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>

</UI>

Hope this helps,

Sharmila

Hi Sharmila, out of interest does specifying both make a difference? You clearly seem to imply that it does, I was just curious to know.

I'm going to try it now.

Can we check a few things?

1. Is RS service running? Is yes, can we restart and also retart IIS.

2. Open the config tool and see if all sections are configured properly as before(in the screenshot you provided).

3. Also, look in the log files to get more info on the internal error.

Thanks,

Hi Sharmila,

I have tried to answer your questions below:

1. I've restarted IIS

2. The configuration tool reports the service states in exactly the same way as my screen shot.

3. The report logs from 19:30 (GMT) are listed below the screenshot. Do you want me to provide the latest logs (22:30)?

Thanks

Clint

Yes, please provide the latest logs.

Thanks,

As an FYI..., there is a similar post that addresses the same issue. - http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=251336&SiteID=1

I just noticed that in the RSWebApplication.config, for ReportServerUrl, the Url is missing a "/" for http://. I'm assuming that it is just a typo. Can we just stop the RS service and start it again and also reset IIS.

<UI>

<ReportServerUrl>http:/<servername>/reportserver</ReportServerUrl>

<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>

<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>

</UI>

Thanks,

Hi. I've updated the logs here.

Hi. I've restarted the RS services and IIS and yes it was a typo.

newbie - empty result set for all queries?

I am a newbie and have installed SQL Server myself on my home machine,
where I'm having problems. When I run the Query Analyzer, I get an
empty result set for all queries, with the message, "The command(s)
completed successfully." So, for instance, if I were to go to
Northwind and type "SELECT * from Employees", which we KNOW isn't
empty, all I see is "The command(s) completed successfully." How do I
get query results?

I thought maybe the problem was permissions. I'm logged into my local
server, which is the computer on which I'm running. The owner is just
"ZIPPY/Owner", ZIPPY being my machine name; since I'm the only one who
uses the computer, I don't even log in, I just take the default "Owner"
account. I start up the SQL analyzer with Windows credentials.

Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?shelah (shelah2@.verizon.net) writes:

You are not even getting an empty result set. Apparently you are in some
sort of noexec mode where the query is sent to SQL Server for validation
only.

There are a couple of ways to get this behaviour. First make sure that
you press the green arrow to run the query. The blue tick is for validation
only.

If the problem is not that simple, check Tools->Options->Connection
properties. If any of SET NOEXEC ON or SET PARSEONLY ON are checked,
uncheck them.

If this does not help, send these commands to SQL Server:

SET PARSEONLY OFF
SET NOEXEC OFF
SET FMTONLY OFF
