newbie maintenance/backup question

Please lend some advice,

Right now we use a standard Database Maintenance Plan to backup and organize our SQL server databases. However we are running out of disk space because every night it does a full backup of the databases and a few of the databases are quite large > 1 GByte.

Is there a way to perform differential backups daily and full backups once a week (or month) in conjunction with a Database Maintenance Plan? I know how to schedule jobs and perform differential and full backups on this kind of schedule for a single database.

But I'm worried that creating separate jobs for each database to handle the full backup, the differential backup, the backup of the transaction log, compacting the database, (etc) is going to become a nightmare to keep up with 50+ jobs.

I like the Database Maintenance Plan because i can go to one place and manage the backup, reorganization, compacting, etc of all of our databases at once and schedule just a few jobs.

What is the best way to maintain (and especially backup) 10+ databases of decent size?

Newbie Entity Relationship Advice

Firstly since the first time posting on this group, I apologise if this is
posted on the wrong newsgroup but could someone please help me with the
question below.
I have received a database designed by a colleague who has since left the
organisation and I was wondering if there were any tools or techniques that
could help create an entity relationship diagram of the database. With Acces

you had a utility called database documentor, which could help me with my
task. If this is not possible I would like to get a list of all tables and
Primary/Foreign key constraints.
There are over 100 tables and it would take a long time to go through each
one looking at primary keys and foreign keys. Is there anyone out there that
can offer this SQL Server 2000 newbie some helping advice?
p.s. What newsgroup should I have posted a general question on?

see a "Diagrams" icon. Use that to create the entity relationship.

visual diagram of the database that can also be used to create, edit or
delete tables. You can launch the wizard by right-cling on the Diagrams
node under the desired database and selecting 'new database diagram'. See
the Books Online for details on usage.

the tables. This will get u the ERD along with all existing relationships...

Newbie Advice re: Installing SSRS

Hi, I've decided to install SSRS (2005) on my windows XP machine. I'm not very familiar with IIS (i'm currently using version 5.1) and I think between IIS and SSRS, i've managed to break something.

Can you open your RSWebApplication.config file(%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Reporting Services\ReportManager\RSWebApplication.config) and check the entries for ReportServerUrl and ReportServerVirtualDirectory. You have to specify ONLY one of them and not both.

For example,

I've just tried it with /reports and got this.

Can we check a few things?

1. Is RS service running? Is yes, can we restart and also retart IIS.

2. Open the config tool and see if all sections are configured properly as before(in the screenshot you provided).

3. Also, look in the log files to get more info on the internal error.

2. The configuration tool reports the service states in exactly the same way as my screen shot.

3. The report logs from 19:30 (GMT) are listed below the screenshot. Do you want me to provide the latest logs (22:30)?

I just noticed that in the RSWebApplication.config, for ReportServerUrl, the Url is missing a "/" for http://. I'm assuming that it is just a typo. Can we just stop the RS service and start it again and also reset IIS.

|||Do you have <xmlns=..."> in your web.config (both report server and report manager dir), rsreportserver.config or rswebapplication.config files? If so remove the line.

Newbie - Advice pls !

I am running a HR database on a 2K SQL 2000 box which administrators have no access to in the near future - I am needing to export certain data from the db to another 2K SQL 2000 box for use in the company phonelist etc.

I am looking at running the task say at midnight every night, the query will replace the data on the destination server.

I know this sounds very vague - is DTS the correct medium for the job ?

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this ?

Thanks in advance !:confused:yeah, i would say DTS is the way to go....just schedule the update every night...do you want to overwrite the data on the destination server or simply append to it? If you want to append an leave the existing data there dont forget, use insert rather than update.
