Newbie question - SP2
know if I have SP2 installed? I tried to check in VS, but it didn't know.
Thanks!to determine the version you are running just type the url of the
report server (ex..http://<exampleWebServer>/reportserver.
Version info is located at the bottom of the page. The final product
release is 8.00.743.00..service pack 1 is 8.00.878.00, and sp2 is
8.00.1042.00
hope this helps

newbie question
i'm kinda new to Microsoft SQL Server. I've just finished my first
install. Now i want to be able to connect macintosh clients to the
server. I'm able to connect using windows 2000 authentification but not
with SQL Server authentification (in mixed mode).
When using "Aqua Data Studio" on my mac, when i try to connect using
the "sa" account it fails because "the connection is not associated to
a secure SQL Server connection".
How can i establish such a secured connection '
Thanks in advance,
PierreWhen you're connecting to SQL server with sa user you are trying to
authenticate with SQL authentication.
That means that you have to set a mixed mode on the server. Then you'll be
able to connect with sa user.
Secure SQL Server connection error you're getting means that you should use
Windows account to log to SQL Server.

Newbie Q: SQL Redundancy
- if I install SQL on one will the installation replicate on the other or do I have to install both seperatly,
- if I have SQL operating on both nodes and I write SQL to one will it replicate over automatically (does it remove the need for SQL redundancy)
- would WebPages do the same.
sorry for the newbie questions but was finding it hard to get specific answers, any help would be appreciated.
Steve
SQL Cluster installation puts the binaries on whatever host nodes you
specify. You can add or remove nodes later if you need to. The clustered
data store is accessable from both nodes, but is arbitrated so that only one
host at a time owns it owns. The entire data store shifts to another node
during a failover. A failover appears like a SQL stop/start to the outside
world. If you have a SQL instance running on a different host node in the
same cluster, it will have a different set of databases and will appear like
(because it is) a separate SQL server.
I do not understand your question about WebPages.

|||Setup will install SQL Server 2000 on both nodes. That is, it will install
the binaries and utilities on a local drive on each node and the data and
log files on the shared drive.
There is only one set of shared databses between the nodes. There is no
data redundancy; only high availability. So if you want data redundancy you
will need to use something like replication or log shipping.

|||Even in a SQL cluster, you have only one set of data (mounted by one node or
the other, but not both).
If you lose the storage solution or corrupt the data, you're toast. That's
where replication comes in.
Look at either NSI product (www.nsisoftware.com).
GeoCluster splits the storage under MSCS, so each node has its own copy -
although only one is active at a time.
DoubleTake replicates data between servers, and also from the active MSCS
node, to another server. This can be built in such a way that you could do
backups or snaps from the redundant server (which gives you some additional
restore and rollback capabilities).

Newbie Install question
I am new to Sql Reporting Service and I have a Newbie question. I have VS.Net installed on one Computer and SQL Server installed on a server. When I install SQL RS, Do I install it on both, my development computer and the SQL Server (windows Server)? And what VER can I put on both computers (if I have to install it on both)? Should I put Enterprise on the Server (Sql server and windows server) and Developer on the VS.Net computer? Or can I put Enterprise on both?
Thank you,
AndreWell, that depends on what you want to do. :) If you want the design app
then you have to install RS on the machine with VS. For the server
components you can install on any machine that has access to a SQL machine.
It is not a requirement that SQL and RS be on the same box.

Newbie - sa password error after ACT! install - Need pro's help!!!
I am admittedly new to this, especially sql server and am in need of a pro's assistance.. I installed Microsoft Small Business accounting, which in turn installed and configured a sql server. When I installed ACT! 2005 (v7.0) and tried to create a database, it states that it cannot find the master file.... so I tried to install sql server from Microsofts site - downloaded all the packages, unzipped them and ran them... the error I get is that the sql server needs to have an sa password and to use some switch to change it... for the life of me I am lost here. I can't use ACT! at this point and I have not ideas of how to remove, reinstall or repair the sql server.... Any help you can provide would be greatly appreicated!
The default sa password is blank. Is it complaining that this is not acceptable and you need to change it ?
What version of SQL Server do you have ? It sounds like SQL Server Express 2005 ? You may well have two instances installed now, one that came with ACT, and one that you've installed.
Overall, I'd say ACT are the people to talk to, you're using SQL Server with ACT, right ?
|||Yes, it is saying that the sa password is empty...specifically: "A strong sa password is required for security purposes. Please us SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to readme for more details. Setup will now exit." That is what is says when I attempt to run ANY installation version of SQL ... attempting to correct the sql error that I get when I run ACT!. Is there a way to repair or rebuild the sql server? I have only one instance, from the ACT! install... Thanks for the reply.. !!|||By the way.. that was the install error for SQL Server 2000 version A specifically... I installed SQL Server 2005 Express... or tried to... it would run either..|||
ACT will support either one ? I'm not sure that you don't have two instances running now ( SQL Server can have more than one version, or multiple instances of the same version, running on a machine ). If I were you, I'd uninstall the lot, including SQL Server, and reinstall ACT. To set the password, you run the installer for SQL Server from the command line and specify SAPWD="whatever", which will set the SA password. If the version of SQL Server you have installed has a management console, or whatever it was called in SS2000, you can go into it, find the Users section, and change the password there.
However, I would be more inclined to do a reinstall from scratch and then try the ACT site:
http://www.act.com/support/technicalsupport/index.cfm
I've looked and I can't see anything specific there, but the problem obviously relates to ACT, and if you've paid for it, they would be the ones who know what's going on, and should be supporting you to get their program working.
|||Sounds great... as for ACT! I called them already.. since I bought this version a while ago,. they stopped supporting it a couple months ago! Nice huh?! As for uninstalling them, I'm all for it.. how do I uninstall SS2000 and all the other instances of SQL Server? It's not in my remove programs dialog....... Thanks again for the help... look for to hearing back from you|||
If SS2000 is not in your list, perhaps MSDE is ( that's the free version ). Otherwise, maybe it uninstalls with ACT. If you go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, the list is alphabetical, if there are any listings that start with SQL Server, you still have SQL Server installed :-)
Your question is right on the edge of what is on topic here, and that means you're unlikely to find people with direct, first hand experience of the problem. If an uninstall/reinstall doesn't solve it, then I'd suggest looking for a forum populated with people who use ACT. I'm happy to try and help, but I'm pretty much in the dark, all I can do is comment based on what I know of SQL Server.

NEWB: Moving DBs to new install of SQL Serv. w/o sp_detach_db
After a power outage (and UPS failure), my boss's SQL Server 2000 won't
start (or crashes quickly or something). We don't have any backups, as it's
a test server. Is there a way to import the database files into a new SQL
installation? By "installation," I mean either a re-installed SS, a second
installation on the same PC, or maybe even on another PC. In another words,
given only the files sitting on the harddrive, is there a way to "import"
the DBs in those files into SS?
Sp_attach_db would probably be the answer, except it seems to require
running sp_detach_db...which I cannot do, as SS is not working.
Thanks in advance,
JayYou could try sp_attach_single_file_db, though I believe that may require a
successful detach as well.

I dont see why you could not simply copy the MDF and LDF
files to another machine (or put in a safe place). Then
fix the issue with SQL2K not starting.
You should then be able to attache the database and log
file again via Enterprise Manager (right-click on
Databases/All tasks/Attach Database...).

This works fine when the databases have been detached successfully.
However, it's not always so easy when the "detach" wasn't clean (as in Jay's

sp_attach_db would indeed be the first thing to try. Since you did
not detach the database cleanly, it may not work. But it's worth to
give it a try. You most likely need both the data files and the log
files.
The other option to try is sp_attach_single_file_db. but if
sp_attach_db does not work, I would not place my bets on this one.
If that files, there is yet a way, but I wiill not post this method
here as it is too dangerous. Suffice to say that while you will be
able to access the database file this, you will get it exactly in
the state it was in at the time of the crash. So if this was a state
of inconsistency in the midst of a transaction, you have a mess of a
database.

I got hung up on the same thing, but as Erland points out, it will
probably work. It did for me.
