Newbie Question on =Today()

I need to pull some reports from an older ERP system in the US via ODBC
I have the report in play, but want to limit the criteria to the items
shipped today
I have a TODAY_FIELD as a calculated Field with the parameter =TODAY()
The Format of the Oracle view is mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss AM and the
TODAY_FIELD
matches that. (ie 8/30/2006 12:00:00 AM)
So I am looking for the criteria for WHERE (REAL_SHIP_DATE >
TODAY()) which will not generate and ORA-00904 error.
Can anyone please help?getdate() is the system date to use. Or am I understanding what you want

I am looking to report all shipping transactions (TRANSACTION_CODE ='OESHIP') which have happened since Midnight.
I know = TODAY() will give you 12:00am today, how do I pass this as a
criteria to a ODBC database call?
I had tried =TODAY() but this is rejected, it seems to suggest I need
to use TO_DATE, but I don't know how to do this either.

This takes the the curent system time, as suggested by Ben, chops of the
time and returns a DateTime value at the very start of the day, similar to
the vb Today() function.

SOrry Folks, I realised (eventually) instead of trying to re-invent the
wheel I should just create a view in the database with the sysdate -1
call and just report the view.

Newbie question about Office version on client machine

Does it matter what version of Office is installed on the clients
machine for opening reports generated by reporting Services?
The reason I am asking is because our users are getting an office
upgrade from 2000 to XP on their machines.No, it does not matter.

Newbie Question

I am replacing the computer expert in my company who just died until we get a replacement. I made some reports using the old database using the wizard. I am trying to get it to kick out reports in HTML and when I try building the program I get this error "The project cannot be deployed because no target server is specified. Provide a value for the TargetServerURL property in the property pages for this project.". What do you think the problem is?

The TargetServerUrl describes the URL of the report server you want to deploy your reports to. Right-click on the report project and open the properties dialog to find the TargetServerUrl.

Assuming you have a report server installation on the local machine, using http://localhost/reportserver should work.

Newbie question

Hi, I am new to reporting services, and I wonder if I am limited to sql queries or can I program reports? This might sound stupid but I have never had to write reports so I am not sure what to look for.

I've been using RS for about 3 months now. You can use SQL queries to populate your datasets, but you can write code to "dynamically" generate those queries.

I'd suggest picking up one of the few RS books out there, like the "Reporting Services in Action" or "Hitchhikers Guide.." books.

series of forms used to create various reports on SQL Server (or Oracle)
data. Creation of these reports is extremely tedious due to fairly
complicated calculations etc. My question for the group is: Is MS
Reporting Services a valid alternative to the way i'm doing things now? I
need to be able to create new interactive custom reports fairly easily and
link to them via the old web application.

apps. You can use either URL integration or web services integration. URL
integration is the easiest and fullest featured (you have roll you own a lot
more when using web services). SQL Server reporting is very easy. The main
thing with Oracle is getting all the client apps installed and properly
configured (but that is not too untypical of anything concerning Oracle). I
go against Sybase and SQL Server. Others once up and running have been
successfull with Oracle. With RS 2005 (released in November) my expectation
is Oracle will be easier to go against. It also has a good many improvements
(my two favorites are dynamic sorting and multi-select parameters). I would
suggest getting the 90 day trial and give it a try.

Actually, i'm not too worried about using it with Oracle. I'm trying to
convince my boss to discontinue development and support for it.

Newbie needs a hand with SQL2005 Reports

I'm trying to run some reports on SQL 2005, but can't even pass the first step of launching the report builder. I have SQL2005 on my local machine, but the report server is installed on a remote server. I launched SQL Business Intelligence Development Studio, which brings Visual studio, but i keep getting a prompt to enter a connection string. How do i get the connection string, or how do i set up my datasource?

Newbie - Report Design help.

Hi folks,
New to RS, but have this really annoying colleague b*tching about
coversheets and TPS reports. (Sorry, off-topic).
Anyways, I've been ranting about the wonders of SQL RS to him, and then
he turns up wanting me to actually do a real report for him. In the
sample below, I'm using the Northwind database.
Basic idea is: You select a year in a combobox and run the report.
The report then shows the quanties sold for each product for that year
in one column, and in the next column it shows the equivalent data for
the previous year.
Tables used in this sample: Orders, OrderDetails and Products.
Hope someone can help me. :-)

Well, I think my problems may be caused by my lack of tsql experience.
If you (or anyone) could point me in the right direction with the query, I
think I could piece the report together from that.

Newbie RDL to RDLC Conversion

Hi,
I am developing a few reports using the Micrsoft report server which
create a "RDL" file. I was wondering if I can directly transfer these
reports to my ASP.Net application and convert them to the RDLC format?
can anybody provide any information about this functionality?
ThanksAssuming they are RS 2005 files all you have to do is change the extension
and bring them into you project.
I looked at using the viewer control in local mode (which is what you are
talking about doing) and if you have a RS server around you are much better
off to use it in server mode. There is a lot of mucking around that you have
to do with local reports. For instance, for a subreport you have to wire up
an event. It is nothing all that difficult but between hooking up events,
retrieving the data etc it is a good bit more effort than just calling the
report and passing a parameter.

Mo|||I think you are a bit confused about how the control works. First, you are
using the reportviewer control that ships with VS 2005. It comes both as a
webform and as a winform control. Assuming you are then you need to decide
whether you want to use local mode or server mode. In server mode it
connects to RS server. You provide the parameters and it calls and then
displays the report. This is pretty straight forward to implement. In local
mode you give it the report (rdlc file) and hand it the dataset (really a
datatable). You have total control and you have to do more work.
RS does not have an RDL file on the server, it stores the object. You have
to save the report from Report Manager or get it out of the original VS
project that created the reports.

Newbee:reporting services gets: Connection could not be made to reportserver

When I try to deploy the sample reports solution to the local IIS on this
win2003 server, the message "A connection could not be made to the report
server http://a1900/Reportserver" appears.
I do this by:
1. Loading the SampleReports.sln into the vb.net IDE.
2. Right-clicking on the SampleReports solution, then selecting Properties,
then setting 'TargetServer URL'=http://a1900/Reportserver (it also fails
when I set it to 'http://localhost/ReportServer'
3. Right-clicking on the SampleReports solution, then selecting 'Deploy'.
4. No errors during the build phase.
The IIS Manager window shows in the left pane:
iis information services
- a1900 (local computer)
-FTP Sites
--...
-Web Sites
-- Default Web Site
--_vti_bin
--reports
-- reportServer
etc.
-Web Service Extensions

The IIS is on the same machine that I operate on and has entries of 'Default
Web Site\Reportserver' and 'Default Web Site\Reports'. The 'Default Website'
has 'Permissions' set to 'Full control' for administrators, as which I am
logged in.
I notice that the 'Reports' and 'ReportServer' entries do not have the blue
globe icon (?) that most of the other IIS folder entries have. Perhaps
that's the cause of my problem.
Do I have to add Web service extensions for Reporting Services?
Perhaps the Reporting services installation did not go right?
How do I find the correct url for the target server?
Where do I have to look.

No.

You are using the correct URL. To test it manually, navigate to the
following path:
http://localhost/ReportServer/ReportService.asmx
This is the webservice that the "Deploy" option uses based upon the
"TargetServer" property you set in the Project settings.
You should receive a SOAP response (XML) w-hen you navigate to that
URL. If you do not get this, then you may have an IIS configuration
problem. Because of the security configurations needed, I generally
just reinstall Reporting Services to make sure the Virtual Directory
and permissions are setup properly. In IIS 6, you should see what
looks like a cog/gear as the symbol for the ReportServer virtual
directory. The globes are for websites (DefaultWeb and such) which
isnt required.
One other thing to check is if your DefaultWebsite is using port 80,
and accepts "(All Unassigned)" IP addresses. Anything unusual in
these IIS settings may indicate part of your problem.

(1) The Reports cretated via report designer are not object oriented? They
are not exposed as classes, my concern is that I can not manipulate the
reports programatically.
(2) The Reports do not exposed events? This might sounds related to question
(1), but even in non OO world, reports expose events too, say MS Access.

event is the only one I know of. So are there any events similar to MS Access?
